When Joey Toboni '03 and Tim Szarnicki '04 talk about The Affordability Project, they say they often get the same response: "What is in it for you?" Such is the housing landscape in San Francisco that even after they explain that they founded The Affordability Project as a nonprofit so they could quickly and sustainably build housing in San Francisco for broad swathes of working people, and that contributing to the social and economic health of the city is their full goal, they are still often met with confusion.
During the 2022-23 school year, educators with Teach With Africa and the Global Teachers Institute visited SI as part of their international exchange program. While their visit was brief, several of those educators made connections that led to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Assistant Principal for Community Formation and Culture Dr. Tasia Davis, who traveled to South Africa this summer to join them at a multi-day professional development summit, which included workshops, school observations, and after school program visits.
Throughout SI's history, students and staff have traveled to school on foot, via Muni, and by car, but a significant number also commute by bicycle and, increasingly, e-bike or scooter.

Among the many talented students at SI who push themselves to achieve in multiple disciplines, Shea Tran ’24 has distinguished herself as a violinist in the orchestral music program, earning first chair and serving as the ensemble's concertmaster, while at the same time performing and choreographing for the dance and drill team.
Several members of the SI community told us what excites them about the New Learning Commons.
SI has partnered with renowned architectural firm Mark Cavagnero Associates to design the New Learning Commons so that faculty and students may easily adapt academic spaces to whatever needs they have. These spaces, which we are calling the Learning Lofts, will be conducive to collaborative, hands-on, and creative work that maximizes the value of teacher-student interactions.
